Oliena is an important agricultural and
pastoral village, not far from Nuoro and dominated by Mount Corrasi, one of the
most beautiful of the Sardinian mountains, whose dolomites take on the colors of
the sky. Visit the old parts of the village with its houses, its characteristic
sights and architectonic details (galleries, windows and chimneys). The numerous
and ancient churches are of particular interest. The major ones are S. Ignazio e
S. Maria and S.Croce where an antique wooden sculpted tabernacle is to be found.
The people of Oliena generously continue to display the hospitality and
traditions of their rich culture.
The territory of Oliena is rich with areas of
rare beauty where a well preserved nature shows its unique phenomena. The
powerful springs of the Gologone are often visited by tourists. The valley of
Lanaitho, behind Mount Corrasi, contains a vast archaeological and speleological
patrimony. Here we find the grottoes of Sa Oche, Su Bentu and Corbeddu; one can
visit easily the village of Seddas Sos Carros, where there is an ancient cult
area that has recently been brought to light; there is also the "ghost" village
of Tiscali situated in the heart of the mountain. Endemisms of the flora still
survive in the area.
Dorgali
It is a large agricultural and pastoral
village, with a strong interest in tourism. Through its hilly position at the
foot of Mount Bardia, it emerges and dominates over the Cedrino and Flumineddu
valleys. It still preserves typical antique prospects.
Among the numerous
churches, there is that of Santa Caterina, where one can find precious ligneous
statues of the 18th century. The production of wines and goat and sheep dairy
products is widely renowned. The filigree jewelry of the local goldsmiths is
also traditional, as are the wool rugs and leather products. The art of pottery
has its traditional products as well as those of recognized artists.
Dorgali The Archaeology
In the local territory there is a vast and
important archaeological patrimony, attested by monuments and scientific finds,
attributed to all prehistoric periods of the island: from the Neolithic to the
Chalcolithic, from the Nuragic civilization to the protohistoric and historic
stages. Visits that are a must are: the village of Serra Orrios, of late Nuragic
times which covers a fairly large area whose many huts and two cult places are
well-preserved; the giants’ tomb of S’Ena e Thomes, with its imposing and
antique stele; the dolmen of Motorra, with its megalithic ceiling; several domus
de janas (witches’ houses), just outside the village.
Dorgali The Excursions
The
scenery of the territory of Dorgali is splendid in all its
variety. The limestone mountains of Bardia and Tului, rich in
vegetation, overlook the village. Inside the mountain of
Ispinigoli there is the homonymous grotto with the highest
stalactite-stalagmite column of Europe and the Precipice of the
Virgins.
At the foot of the mountain there is the thermal spring
of San Giovanni.
The impressive Gorroppu Gorge is truly
suggestive, with its high vertical rockfaces which wind through
the mountains of the Supramonte between Orgosolo and Urzulei.
A
coveted destination are the coastal areas of Codula Ilune, Cala
Ilune, Fuile de Mare, Toddeittu and Cuccuru de Janas.
Gonone
This picturesque settlement is
Dorgali’s natural outlet to the sea. It offers a fair range of
hotels, a campsite both well organized and shaded.
The small
tourist harbor is a busy stopover for pleasure boating. An
efficient ferry service carries tourists to the famous and
unforgettable Grottoes of the Bue Marino (sea ox) and enables
them to visit the wild, unpolluted coastline fringed by little
beaches and inlets among rocky cliffs fashioned by the elements.
Hiring a boat offers the freedom of reserved visits to Cala
Ilune, Cala Cartoe, Osalla and many other sites.
Baunei
It
is a large agricultural and pastoral village with strong and
justified prospects for tourism. Situated on the slopes of Mount
Santo, its territory extends over a vast, rugged, and still
intact coastline, where one can gaze at inlets and marine sights
that are truly unique. There are numerous itineraries available
departing from the village or from the coast, all of
environmental, archaeological and ethnological interest.
Of
particular interest is the basalt plateau of Golgo where one
discovers the abyss of the same name, the deepest on the island.
In the vicinity of the nearby church of San Pietro, there is the
famous anthropomorphous cippus and the complex nuraghe of Coa de
Serra.
Baunei The Falesia
The coastline between
Dorgali-Cala Gonone and Santa Maria Navarrese is one of the most
fascinating and uncontaminated spectacles that nature can offer.
It is the greatest falesia of the Mediterranean, where the
coastal limestone cliffs plunge into a crystal clear sea of
vivid, iridescent colors; virtually unreachable from land, it
preserves a luxurious vegetation which alternates with the bare
rock; pinnacles, crevasses and ravines alternate in sceneries
that seem timeless.
Seven beaches of exceptional beauty, and
therefore strictly controlled, bestrew the falesia; they are the
coves of Fuile, Ilune, Biriola, Mariolu, Dei Gabbiani and
Goloritzu'.
